Abstract

1400385 Floors; roofs; bridge decks W R GRACE & CO 30 May 1972 [30 May 1971] 56862/70 Headings E1G and E1W [Also in Division B5] A method of forming a water-proof seal on a structure e.g. a floor, roof or bridge deck comprises applying thereto the adhesive face of a structure comprising (a) a bituminous sheet comprising two layers attached to each other, one layer being of a substantially non- adhesive bituminous composition, and each of the bituminous compositions comprising at least one polymer uniformly or non-uniformly distributed throughout the thickness of the layer thereof, and (b) on the surface of the layer of the pressure sensitive adhesive composition, a protective coating which is physically removed from (a) prior to application. A pressure sensitive adhesive is defined as being a material which immediately and permanently bonds at ambient temperatures and without the application of heat or solvents, the structure to an irregular or dusty concrete structure. The term "bituminous" is defined as including bitumen, asphaltic bitumen, tars and pitches and their derivatives (both natural or synthetic). The polymer may be elastomeric or non elastomeric e.g. natural or synthetic rubber which may be reclaimed. The protective coating may be a release coated paper e.g. a siliconised paper or a vinyl chloride polymer film. The non-adhesive face of (a) can be treated to protect it against damage and/or treated to provide an improved keying surface for another material e.g. the face can be textured or gritted. In a preferred embodiment, a layer of reinforcing material e.g. glass fibre in the form of a woven fabric, mesh, tissue, continuous film or strand, a synthetic polymer in the form of a woven fabric, mesh, film or strand, a metal in the form of a foil or expanded or perforated metal, paper or a woven or non-woven fabric may be contained within either or both of the layers or between the layers. The bituminous sheet may be laid on a concrete base and be covered by a layer of concrete, sand/cement or asphalt or by cladding material.
