[Also in Division E1] A waterproof seal on a surface, e.g. a road, floor, wall or ceiling is produced by applying an exposed face of a membrane of waterproofing pressure-sensitive adhesive supported on a sheetlike substrate, the membrane being at least 0À025 cm. thick and the membrane-substrate structure being at least 15 cm. wide. If necessary overlapping structures may be used to seal the whole surface. The membrane can be a bituminous adhesive, preferably containing natural or synthetic rubber, polychloroprene, butyl rubber, oil-based mastics, rosin composition and may be reinforced with glass fibre scrim. The substrate may be permanently adhered to the membrane as a film of natural rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, polychloroprene, butyl rubber, aluminium or copper foil, woven and non-woven fabrics, e.g. woven glass tissue, hessian, cotton scrim, bituminous roofing felt. The surface of the substrate remote from the membrane may be coated with adhesive to which particulate material, e.g. aggregate, sand or cork granules is applied. Alternatively the substrate may be a removable protective layer, e.g. siliconized paper. The structure may be a laminate of the protective layer, the membrane and either an adherent substrate or a second protective layer. For securing cladding material, e.g. polystyrene tiles to a floor, wall or ceiling, the protective layer on one face of the laminate is removed, the exposed face of the membrane applied to the surface, the second protective layer removed and the cladding material applied.
