1499783 Catalytic hydration of olefins S A TEXACO BELGIUM NV 6 Feb 1976 4886/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Alcohols are produced by heating an olefin CH 2 = CHR where R is H or alkyl with water in an oxygen free atmosphere in the presence of a catalyst which is a vinyl phosphonic aciddivinyl sulphone copolymer containing x units of formula any y units of the formula in which the ratio x : y is in the range of 0À5 to 1À5. The examples relate to the hydration of ethylene; propylene may also be hydrated.
