Abstract

1491880 Photo-electric investigation of a plurality of samples SOCIAL SERVICES SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 28 Oct 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 46608/74 Divided out of 1491879 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] An optical apparatus for producing a scanning beam of visible, I.F. or U.V. light, for colorimetric or fluorimetric analysis of blood samples, comprises a member 7 mounted to rotate about an axis perpendicular thereto and carrying two light guides 8, 9, which may be fibre bundles, or trains of mirrors or prisms. The guide 8 conducts light from a source 10 down a shaft 3 and projects it through lens 11 on to the input face of the guide 9, the output end of which faces a photomultiplier 12. The member 7 is rotated continuously and a table 6, carrying the samples, is rotated intermittently about the same axis, light from 8 traversing at least all the samples in turn en route to 9 during each dwell. For fluorimetric analysis the input end of the guide 9 faces the bottom of the samples, as 9', and a colour filter is placed between the output end and the photo-multiplier 12. A filter or grating may be mounted between the lamp 10 and the input face of the guide 8. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown), light from guide 9 or 9' is passed through a light guide 15 to photomultipliers 16 and having a different colour filter 17.
