Abstract

1491492 Unwinding twisted filaments; blending filaments BRUNSWICK CORP 22 Oct 1974 [29 Oct 1973] 45640/74 Headings D1F and D1J A method of blending a tow 24 of continuous, metal rough-surfaced filaments with fibre sliver 28, comprises storing the tow of metal filaments in a twisted state upon a spool 44, unwinding the tow 24 from the spool 44 by rotating the spool about its longitudinal axis 46 and simultaneously substantially untwisting the filaments by rotating the spool 44 about a second axis 40, passing the substantially untwisted tow 24 together with the fibre sliver 28 through guide means 26 to a blending machine indicated generally at 32, 34, using the blending machine to draw the tow off the spool 44, and further using the blending machine 32, 34 to blend therein the metal filaments with the fibre sliver and break therein the metal filaments into staple fibre. The tow 24 may initially be twisted a half a turn per inch run and be subsequently untwisted about 30%. The tow preferably comprises more than 600 filaments.
