Abstract

1479742 Two-stage photocuring process NIPPON PAINT CO Ltd 16 Sept 1974 [17 Sept 1973 (2)] 40172/74 Headings C3P and C3G A two-stage process for curing a photocurable coating composition comprises (1) irradiating a photocurable coating composition containing a photosensitizer, the composition being in the form of a coating on a substrate, with actinic radiation having a wavelength in the range 185-500 mÁ and a dominant wavelength in the range 380-420 mÁ, or irradiating the composition with actinic radiation having a wavelength in the range 185-500 mÁ through a filter which permits radiation having a wavelength not greater than 225 mÁ to pass therethrough with a transmittance of 0 to 10% and which permits higher wavelength actinic radiation to be transmitted therethrough; and then (2) irradiating the composition with actinic radiation having a wavelength in the range 185-500 mÁ and a dominant wavelength in a range other than 380-420 mÁ, or irradiating the composition with actinic radiation having a wavelength in the range 185-500 mÁ without the use of a filter, respectively. The radiation having a dominant wavelength in the range 380-420 mÁ can be obtained from conventional medium- or high-pressure mercury lamps which have been modified by inclusion of a metal selected from Ga, Pb, Al, Ca, Ce, In, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Nb, Sc, Sr and Th, or a compound of such a metal, e.g. an iodide. The filter, where used, may be a silicate glass, e.g. soda-lime, lead, borosilicate, barium or alumina silicate glass, or a borate glass, e.g. alumina borate glass. The photocurable composition suitably comprises as the curable component an unsaturated polyester, unsaturated polyurethane, unsaturated acrylic, unsaturated alkyd or unsaturated epoxy resin. Examples of the photosensitizer are benzoin, benzoin ethers, benzophenone, benzil, 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde and disulphides. The photocuring process is of particular application in the curing of coloured coatings and, in addition to a colourant, the compositions may include such components as polymerizable monomers, solvents, fillers, &c. In the examples, the photocurable compositions are based on urethane-acrylate resins; polyesters modified by reaction with glycidyl methacrylate or a urethane-acrylate to introduce unsaturation; and acrylic resins modified by esterification to introduce unsaturation. In some cases the resins are used together with monomers selected from methyl methacrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, triallyl isocyanurate and styrene.
