Abstract

1478370 Rotary deadbolt WALTER KIDDE & CO INC 20 Aug 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 36580/74 Heading E2A Fastening devices e.g. for luggage cases, &c comprise a frame on one member and having a projection thereon, a manually operable deadbolt rotatable on the projection, and a keeper on the other member, the deadbolt engaging the keeper and drawing it toward the frame as the deadbolt is rotated to the closed position and releasing it as it is rotated in the opposite direction to the open position. As shown, the device comprises frame B with a deadbolt C cooperating with keeper element E having a boss 12. Frame B comprises a portion 24 for connection to a handle, a base 26 and a projection 28 on which is pivoted the deadbolt C which has a planar top and sides 70, 72, the deadbolt C being held thereon by a leaf spring (D, Figs. 1, 2, 4 not shown). Side 70 engages boss 12 on rotation. Projection 28 has a stop 90, surface 92 of which contacts side 70 of deadbolt C when in the closed position, surface 94 contacts side 72 thereof when in the open position, surfaces 96, 98 and surface 100 of projection 28 forming guide surfaces for boss 12. Deadbolt C also has a locking bolt (102, Figs. 1, 2, 5 not shown) having a key-engageable notch (108), and an end portion (104) engaging recess 106 in projection 28 when locked to prevent rotation of deadbolt C. A section (132) of a plate (110) has detents (134, 136 Figs. 5, 11, 12 not shown) engaging projection (138) on bolt (102) to retain it in its locked or unlocked position. Base 26 of frame B has an opening (148) for a ball 150 urged upwardly by extension (152) of leaf spring (D) and engaging recesses under deadbolt C to retain it in its open or closed positions.
