Abstract

1338360 Locks HEINRICH HULTER JNR 21 Aug 1972 [21 Aug 1971] 38934/72 Heading E2A A combination lock comprises knobs 17 with indicia, each knob being rotatable relatively to a corresponding locking wheel 12 for changing the combination and with the locking wheel for setting the combination the locking wheel having an opening 14 into which a tang 13 of a locking slider 8 engages when the correct combination has been set to enable the locking slider to slide to release the lock wherein except when the correct combination is set the locking slider is mechanically prevented from sliding longitudinally into contact with the locking wheel. A lock housing 1 is pivoted about a pivot 2 to lie against an attachment plate 3 and engage a hasp and notches on either side of a bolt 5. The locking slider 8 has the offset tang 27 which in locking position engages an aperture 29 in the plate 3. To release the lock the combination is set by the knobs 17 and a projecting tongue 9 of the slider is pressed to disengage the tang from the plate and allow the housing to pivot to release the hasp. When the lock is operative levers 24, Fig. 9, pivoted to the base of the housing urge a safety bolt 20 to engage in an aperture in the slider 8 against the pressure of a spring 22 to lock the slider. When the combination is set, Fig. 5, the levers abut flats on the sides of the locking wheels and the safety bolt disengages the slider under the pressure of the spring to allow the slider to slide. The knobs 17 frictionally engage the locking wheels and both move together until the combination is set when the locking wheels are held stationary by the tangs of the slider, the knobs may then be moved relative to the locking wheels to change the combination by overcoming the friction between the knobs and stationary locking wheels. Each locking wheel has a stud 12' which pivotally engages in an aperture in the base 4. Each locking wheel has a friction head 15 which engages in a recess 16 and the knob 117, the knob has a rim 17' which displays the digits and these are visible through windows 31 in the housing.
