Abstract
1468177 Pipe insulation MORGAN REFRACTORIES Ltd 30 April 1974 [3 May 1973] 21104/73 Heading F2P [Also in Division F4] A horizontal metal skid rail 1, 2 of a re-heat furnace is sheathed by C-shaped refractory blocks 4 and 5. The rail consists of a steel pipe 1 (e.g. water cooled) and steel rib 2. Each block is such that it hangs on an upper part of the pipe and swings under gravity beneath the pipe so as to extend more than half way thereunder into engagement with an opposite complementary block to form a collar therewith. Opposite blocks have circumferentially projecting terminal portions 6, 7 which interengage. Each terminal portion has a radially inner part of reduced axial dimension set inwardly from each axial end face of the block. These parts provide abutments which oppose axial separation of each pair of blocks forming a collar. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the radially inner part of block 5 provides a wedge shaped portion bounded by a plane surface 5F and a part frusto-conical surface 7C. This wedge shaped portion interfits an undercut recess 4D in block 4. Blocks 4 and 5 are identical and a similar wedge shaped portion of block 4, bounded by plane surface 4F and a part frustoconical surface 6C, interfits an undercut recess 5D in block 5. Between the blocks and pipe in space 3, Fig. 1, there is ceramic fibre (not shown). At the top, gaps 8 are packed with mortar (not shown). Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates blocks with tongue and groove abutments (9C, 10D and 10C, 9D). These blocks are shaped to surround a tube of triangular cross-section. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate blocks similar to those shown in Fig. 1 but modified so as to completely surround a pipe 11 forming part of the supporting structure for skid rails. The tiles may be moulded from mullite blended with plastic refractory clay. To make up a required length of refractory sheathing some half width collars may be used. Half width blocks are indicated in the figures by dotted lines L.
