Abstract

1457314 Rollers ESCHER WYSS Ltd 1 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 14309/74 Heading F2U [Also in Division D2] In a set of calender rolls 7, 8, 9, 10 and 16 one roll has a shell 20 rotatable relative to, and movable radially relative to, a support 17 by hydraulic pressure applied to support elements 21, the shell 20 being movable to open the calender, in which opening bearing blocks 12 of the rolls 8, 9 and 10 move in guides 11 at a speed determined by hydraulic piston and cylinder devices 31, 30 having adjustable throttles determining the rate of egress of fluid (Fig. 5, not shown). The support elements 21 may comprise a single stripshaped element. The guides 11 are in bearing members 3 adjustably mounted on a guide 2 of a support 1. The range of movement of the bearing blocks is determined by screws 15. The rolls move down at a speed determined by their position, the lower a roll the faster it moves. Each piston and cylinder device 31, 30 is supplied with oil at low pressure through duct 33 from a pump having a low-pressure by-pass back to a reservoir so that when roll 20 is dropped by release of pressure through operation of valve 26 the weight of each roll above (apart from roll 7) squeezes the oil out of the respective cylinders 30 through the throttles (Fig. 5, not shown), the weight of a roll providing sufficient pressure for the oil to pass via the by-pass to a reservoir. The final movement of a roll is braked by entry of a tapered projection 35 of the piston 31 into a recess 34, which contains oil.
