1451429 Refining iron CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES-CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 20 June 1975 [20 June 1974] 26393/75 Heading C7D In a pig-iron refining process, molten pig-iron in a converter is bottom blown through tuyeres with industrially pure oxygen and the input and output parameters are monitored. To control the quality of the steel, the temperature of the fumes leaving the converter during the oxygen blowing are measured to detect a minimum, which corresponds to the instant the slag is molten, and from that point, only a predetermined amount of oxygen is blown into the melt to produce the desired quality of steel, which may be defined by the temperature or composition of the steel. The quality of oxygen blown in after the slag is molten is determined from a previously calculated relationship between the iron content of the slag and the amount of oxygen blown after melting.
