Abstract
1423751 Controlling converter steelmaking PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP and AVRR 23 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9015/73 Heading C7D Scrap is charged to a converter and pre-heated by combustion of gaseous fuel supplied through the outer of two coaxial passages of a submerged tuyere with oxygen supplied through the inner passage. When pre-heating is completed molten iron is added and blowing continued with a stream of oxygen surrounded by hydrocarbon shielding gas, the gas ratio being controlled to produce an effluent gas having a desired analysis as determined by measurement of oxygen partial pressure. The whole steelmaking operation, including charge calculation, and control of pre-heating and refining, is effected by a computer receiving, in addition to the initial input, signals from a thermocouple lance 20 and oxygen partial pressure sensor 30, in response to which it controls selection and blowing time of the various gases and the injection of additives from hoppers 40, 41. In addition to the basal tuyeres mounted in box 14 the converter may be equipped with auxiliary tuyeres directed into the space above the bath.
