Abstract
1329580 Tungsten carbide WICKMAN WIMET Ltd 7 Feb 1972 [23 Dec 1970] 61143/70 Heading C1A The proportion of tungsten carbide in a product, which include tungsten carbide and an impurity in the form of a double carbide of tungsten and iron, is increased by heating the product with free carbon which may already be present in the product, in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature above 1350‹ C. to cause the free carbon to react with the double carbide. The impure product, which is preferably pulverized before the heating, is obtained from a tungsten ore, by electrolysis or direct reduction with carbon. Silica and lime based impurities may be removed by leaching with HCl. The heating may be carried out in H 2 and the product leached with HCl to remove iron or under reduced pressure such that iron is removed by vaporization.
