Abstract
1,232,074. Purifying magnesium chloride. NATIONAL LEAD CO. 28 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 31070/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] Magnesium chloride, for use in preparing Mg by electrolysis, is treated to substantially eliminate sulphate or other impurities therein by forming a melt of the contaminated MgCl 2 having dispersed therein active and/or colloidal carbon in amount sufficient to react with at least half the oxygen values of the sulphates, and maintaining the melt in a molten condition, without passing a chlorine-containing gas therethrough, to cause the carbon to react with the sulphates and evolve gaseous oxygen compounds. The process may be carried out as a pretreatment for electrolysis. The active and/or colloidal carbon may be formed in situ from molasses or organic matter from marine organisms, by adding the carbon-forming material to solid MgCl 2 before melting, to a solution of the MgCl 2 or to a melt of the MgCl 2 .
