Abstract
1329085 Gelation of silica sols NALFLOC Ltd 17 Nov 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 41846/69 Heading C1A An aqueous silica sol is gelled in the presence of an ammonium salt and an acid as a composite gelling agent. The ammonium salt and the acid are preferably added to the silica sol in aqueous solution. The ammonium salt and acid are preferably mixed before their addition to the silica sol, otherwise if added independently the acid is added first. The ammonium salt may be a salt of an organic or an inorganic acid, e.g. the chloride, sulphate, nitrate, formate, acetate and propionate. The acid may be an organic or an inorganic acid, e.g. tartaric, acetic, citric and hydrochloric acids. Composite gelling agents which produce a "minimum gelling time" within normally acceptable or desirable time limits generally contain ammonium salt and acid in proportions of from 1 : 2 to 10 : 1 by weight. The tendency of silica sols to gel is greatest when the pH of the system is from about 6 to 8 so the combinations of ammonium salts and acids are arranged to fall within this range of pH while the sol gels. Preferably the gelling agent is added to the sol. in an amount of 8 to 14% by volume based on the volume of the sol. Preferably the silica sol contains 20 to 50% by weight of silica. Also is provided a process for making shaped refractory materials comprising gelling a mixture of a silica sol and a powdered and/or a fibrous refractory material using as gelling agent an ammonium salt and an acid.
