Abstract

1324377 Luminescent screens RCA CORPORATION 30 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 46509/70 Heading H1D A method of fabricating a C.R.T. screen structure comprises covering discrete surface areas with phosphor mixed with a photo resist material insolubilized by light, applying a light opaque dye 11a as a solution to the phosphor deposits and insolubilizing by applying a mordant solution, applying to the covered and uncovered areas a screen material mixed with a soluble photo-resist material, e.g. dichromate sensitized P.V.A., projecting radiation through the screen support to insolubilize the overcoating mixture between the phosphor deposits and removing the remaining overcoat mixture. The photo-resist with the phosphor may be P.V.A., fish glue or gelatine, and the dye and mordant solutions may be aqueous e.g. a mordant solution of 2 % by wt. aluminium chloride, 1% by wt. barium acetate or aluminium ammonium sulphate and an aqueous dye solution of 5% black dye with 1À25% P.V.A. or a red dye may be used. The overcoating mixture may be lightabsorbing, e.g. of graphite, to produce a matrix type screen, or may be of a phosphor material. Overcoating 12 may be of water, graphite particles and a dichromated sensitized polyvinyl alcohol, and after drying, exposed to U.V. lamps 13. The dye and mordant are preferably thermally decomposed with the organic photoresist on bake-out. The production of an insolubilized dye prior to the step of selective dye removal ensures the insolubilized dye is not leached or removed from the phosphor coated areas in any subsequent process step and the dye area ensures less than 2% U.V. transmission. As exemplified, dye areas 11a are formed by initially coating the entire screen area with the dye solution, insolubiilzing, and then washing with water spray, the insoluble dye layer then washing off the glass area. The process may be applied to two types of phosphor dots, the remaining screen area being covered with a third phosphor. Colour TV shadow mask tubes are exemplified and dot type phosphor screens are instanced and also grid and bar type screens.
