Abstract
1304428 Electroluminescence GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 58536/70 Heading C4S [Also in Division F4] A solid state fiber optics device comprises a header 12, light emitting (e.g. visible or infrared) diode 11, at least one fibre optics conductor 23, shell 18, solid, light transmitting encapsulating material 22 of refractive index greater than unity and in intimate moulded contact with the diode and corresponding end of the or each fibre optics conductor. In fabrication, the diode is mounted on the header, the shell attached to the header, the encapsulant poured in a liquid state, an end of the fibre optics component inserted and maintained in position until the encapsulant hardens. Shell 18 is preferably metal but may be a plastics material, and welded or otherwise attached at 19. The ten light conductors 23 are preferably flexible. Diode 11 may be gallium arsenide, phosphide, or silicon carbide having relatively high Á and hence undesirably small critical angle for light emission from the upper surface. Encapsulant 22 may be glass, plastics such as an acrylic or epoxies. A ten column array with photo-cells for punched tape reading in data processing is exemplified.
