Abstract

1497115 Optical couplers STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 20 March 1975 11626/75 Heading H1K An arrangement for indicating the switching state of a semi-conductor optical coupler 11, 12 includes a body of up-converting anti- Stokes phosphor 14 in use, adjacent the light emitting device, e.g. an infra-red radiating diode 12, of the coupler and adapted to convert scattered radiation from the device into visible radiation and means, e.g. a rod lens 18, whereby the visible radiation may be observed. As shown the arrangement is integral with the coupler and is covered by a plastics housing 16. The rod lens 18 may be replaced by optical fibres which may carry the light signal to a remote display panel. The light emitting device 12 is separated from a photosensitive semiconductor device by a transparent isolator 13. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the optical coupler comprises a light emitting diode co-planar with and separated from a mesa-type photosensitive device and both mounted on a substrate. The gap between the diode and device is filled with a material of suitable high refractive index, e.g. silicone resin.
