Abstract

1399050 Optical sample holders STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 21 Aug 1973 39440/73 Heading G2J [Also in Division H5] An atomic absorption spectroscopy furnace comprises a graphite tube 1 each end of which is clamped in an electrically conductive heat sink 2, 3 by means of a tapered bush 9,10 pressed into a co-operating tapered hole in the heat sink by a clamping wheel 11, 12 in screw-threaded engagement with the heat sink, the furnace having an unobstructed path for the passage of light in the direction of the axis of the tube X Y X Y'. The graphite tube has a central region 7 of reduced wall thickness to increase the temperature in use in this region. A hole 8 permits insertion of a sample into the tube. The heat sinks have terminals 5 and cooling fluid inlets and outlets 6. Silica casing 17 extends between the heat sinks surrounding the tube 1 and has a tangential inlet for argon and a radial outlet 19 which in use, is aligned with hole 8 so that after sweeping air from the casing a pipette can be inserted to put a sample into the furnace. The pipette blocks the outlet so that argon sweeps air also from the inside of tube 1. Heat sinks 2, 3 are insulated electrically from supporting platform 4.
