Abstract

1,117,776. Electric furnaces. NIHON GENSHIRYOKU KENKYU-SHO. 15 Sept., 1965 [21 Sept., 1964], No. 39470/65. Heading H5H. A high temperature, high pressure electric resistance furnace comprises a pressure vessel 14 accommodating a tubular carbon or graphite resistance heater 1 within a metal casing 4 filled with powdered carbon 10; inert gas flow paths ensure equal pressure in the casing 4 and heater 1. The flow paths for argon or N 2 comprise apertures 30 through the end plates 3 of the casing covered by permeable graphite rings 11 and tubes 19 connecting the vessel with the interior of the heater. A helically grooved member 13 directs gas entering the heater over the walls. Current is supplied by conductors 18 to terminals 2 attached to the ends of the heater extending beyond the casing and enclosed by water cooled rings 6. The casing is cooled by coiled water tubes 5. The interior of the heater can be viewed through radially extending tubes 9, and aligned windows (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the vessel 14. The furnace may be used for refining and melting metals and ceramics and measuring their physical, chemical and electrical properties, also for formation of artificial jewel crystals and high temperature gas research.
