1398044 Making microcapsules NCR CORP 19 June 1973 [5 July 1972 (2)] 28939/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division B1] Microcapsules are made by conventional liquid/liquid phase separation reactions carried out in a continuous process conducted in a liquid medium under continuous turbulent flow conditions. The reactants, vehicle and core material may be mixed before subjection to the manufacturing conditions (see Fig. 1, not shown) or they may be added successively in any convenient order to a turbulently flowing stream of vehicle. The core material may be any desired solid, liquid or gas, the vehicle is preferably water and the encapsulating material may be any of the conventionally used natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic polymers, appropriate hardeners being added if necessary. The invention includes apparatus for carrying out the process comprising conduit system (represented schematically by C 1 , C 2 etc. and the interconnecting ducts 20), either a single introduction port to receive an intimate mixture of manufacturing materials together with pumping means for maintaining turbulent flow of the materials (see Fig. 1, not shown) or a plurality of spaced introduction ports 16 to receive different manufacturing materials, each with its own pumping means 15 for maintaining turbulent flow and, in either case, an exit port 17 for releasing the formed capsules and temperaturecontrolling means for maintaining constant temperature conditions at any particular location or locations along the conduit.
