Abstract
Coated copper phthalocyanine which may be employed as a pigment in paints and inks, is prepared by mixing copper phthalocyanine with a liquid polymer prepared from ethylacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and acrylic acid, and trichlorotrifluoroethane at 150 DEG F. and then removing the carrier to produce coated particles of copper phthalocyanine.ALSO:A process for preparing a solid particulate material coated with a polymeric material comprises mixing a solid particulate substance and a polymerizable liquid material under turbulent conditions and in the presence of an inert non-solvent liquid carrier so as to coat the solid with the polymerizable liquid and thereafter polymerizing the polymerizable liquid to a polymeric solid while maintaining turbulent conditions and thereby producing discrete solid particles coated with a solid polymeric material. The polymerizable liquid may be converted to a solid by the use of heat or a catalyst. Plasticizers may also be used in the process. The solid particulate substances mentioned include ammonium perchlorate, titanium dioxide, lead dioxide, ferric oxide and carbon black. The dispersing media mentioned include water, aliphatic and olefinic hydrocarbons or halogenated derivatives thereof, siloxanes, alcoholes, amines, ethers, esters, ketones and aldehydes. The coating materials include phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, acrylate resins, vinyl polymers, thioplasts and acrylamide polymers. In Example I ammonium perchlorate is mixed with liquid polybutadiene, polyarylenepolyisocyanate resin and hexamethyldisiloxane and heated. The coated ammonium perchlorate particles may be employed as a component of solid rocket propellant grains.ALSO:Coated urea which may be employed as a slow release fertilizer, is prepared by mixing urea with a liquid polymer prepared from butadiene and allyl glycidyl ether, trichloroethylene and phosphoric acid as curing catalyst at 120 DEG F., and then removing the carrier to produce coated particles of urea (Example III).ALSO:A process for preparing a solid particulate material coated with a polymeric material, comprises mixing a solid particulate substance and a polymerizable liquid material under turbulent conditions and in the presence of an inert non-solvent liquid carrier so as to coat the solid with the polymerizable liquid and thereafter polymerizing the polymerizable liquid to a polymeric solid while maintaining turbulent conditions and thereby producing discrete solid particles coated with a solid polymeric material. The polymerizable liquid may be converted to a solid by the use of heat or a catalyst. Plasticizers may also be used in the process. The solid particulate substances mentioned include a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, hexene or halogenated olefins, polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, polyester, thioplast, natural or synthetic rubber, polyamide, polyvinyl resin, polyvinylidene resin, polystyrene, acrylic resin, cellulose, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, cellulose ether (e.g. methyl, ethyl, carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, cyanoethyl and benzyl), starch, chitin, protein (e.g. casein and vegetable globulins), polymerized drying oil, aminoplast, phenolic resin, silicone resin, asbestos fibres, powdered metals (e.g. Al, Cu, Li, Na), ammonium perchlorate, titanium dioxide, lead dioxide, ferric oxide, carbon black copper phthalocyanine and urea. In Example 4 pigmented polyamide fibres are coated with a tetramethylene diamine-succinic acid polymer dispersed in hexane.ALSO:A process for preparing a solid particulate material coated with a polymeric material, comprises mixing a solid particulate substance and a polymerizable liquid material under turbulent conditions and in the presence of an inert non-solvent liquid carrier so as to coat the solid with the polymerizable liquid and thereafter polymerizing the polymerizable liquid to a polymeric solid while maintaining turbulent conditions and thereby producing discrete solid particles coated with a solid polymeric material. The polymerizable liquid may be converted to a solid by the use of heat or a catalyst. Plasticizers may also be used in the process. The solid particulate substances mentioned include a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, hexene or halogenated olefins, polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, polyester, thioplast, natural or synthetic rubber, polyamide, polyvinyl resin, polyvinylidene resin, polystyrene, acrylic resin, cellulose, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, cellulose ether (e.g. methyl, ethyl, carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, cyanoethyl and benzyl), starch, chitin, protein (e.g. casein and vegetable globulins), polymerized drying oil, aminoplast, phenolic resin, silicone resin, asbestos fibres, powdered metals (e.g. Al, Cu, Li, Na), ammonium perchlorate, titanium dioxide, lead dioxide, ferric oxide, carbon black, copper phthalocyanine and urea. The dispersing media mentioned include water, aliphatic and olefinic hydrocarbons or halogenated derivative thereof, siloxanes, alcohols, amines, ethers, esters, ketones and aldehydes. The coating materials include phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, acrylate resins, vinyl polymers, thioplasts and acrylamide polymers. In Example IV pigmented polyamide fibres are mixed with a liquid tetramethylene diaminesuccinic acid polymer, polyarylene polyisocyanate resin and hexane. The coated fibres are cured and then bonded to a cotton fabric by an epoxy resin to give a coloured synthetic felt.
