Abstract

1397791 Controlling rail vehicles SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE-Gebr 6 April 1972 [16 April 1971 10 Nov 1971] 16023/72 Headings B7L and B7N In a transport system in which a carriage 1 runs in an enclosed hollow rail 13 in which it is supported on rollers 3, 4, is stabilized by rollers 11, and normally guided by rollers 6-9, the carriage is provided with a tracking member 19 which is moved at track junctions to engage one or other side of a further rail 30, 31 provided only at the junctions to route the carriage to a required branch or from a branch to a main line. The system can be an overhead rail system (as shown) with hanger member 15 supporting a load or the rail can be at ground or below ground level with a slit in its upper surface via which the carriage 1 is connected to a vehicle body. At a branching junction, Fig. 5, the tracking member 19 runs initially in a centre slot in the further rail and is then moved by element 26 controlled via solenoid 27 to the right or left of the rail 30 in dependence on which route has to be followed. After passing the junction fixed rail elements 33 allow the tracking member to return to its mid position under the action of springs 22. At a meeting junction, Fig. 4, fixed track elements 28 move the tracking member to one or other side of the rail 31 in dependence on the direction of approach and fixed track member 35 after the junction assists in returning the member to its mid position. The switching element 26 can be replaced by means on the vehicle for moving the tracking member 19 at approach to a branching junction.
