Abstract
1439204 Electromagnetically-suspended railway SIEMENS AG 28 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45622/73 Heading B7L A magnetically-suspended vehicle F runs along a first track portion 1 to a junction region W via which it can either continue (straight on) the first track portion or be diverted along a second (curved) track portion. While on the track portions, the vehicle F is electromagnetically suspended by co-operation between a line of horizontal conductor plates 3 on the track and current-carrying conductor loops 4 on the vehicle; laterally guided by co-operation between vertical conductor plates 7 on the track, which extend between parts of the vehicle, and current-carrying loops 6 on the vehicle; and propelled by a linear motor formed by the vertical plates 7 co-operating with stator components 8 on the vehicle. When in the junction region W, the vehicle F is electromagnetically suspended by co-operation between horizontal conductor plates 7a (forming a continuation of the plates 3) and the loops 4; laterally guided by co-operation between outer conductor plates 7b of magnetic material with further currentcarrying loops 66; and propelled by a linear motor formed by central horizontal conductor plates 7a and additional conducting loops 8a on the vehicle, the vertical plates 7 being omitted in the junction region so that none of the conductor means of the track extend between parts of the vehicle. In order to select the required route at the junction, a selected one of the loops 6b is energized to follow the desired outer plate 7b. Retractable wheels 10 to contact rails 9 are also provided for support and guidance at low vehicle speeds.
