Abstract
1395746 Arc discharge device SHEER KORMAN ASSOCIATES Inc 25 May 1972 [6 July 1971] 24650/72 Heading H5H In a free-burning (i.e. unconstrained), arc discharge, a shielding gas is directed along a passage 15 to protect the tip 1 of the arc cathode from reactive material entrained in the cathode gas flow in the outer passage 14, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows an alternative arrangement having passage 14 replaced by nozzles 17, 17a. There may be four nozzles. The shielding gas may be helium, argon, neon, krypton, nitrogen, hydrogen or the like. The cathode may be of copper rod containing a tungsten insert forming the conical tip 1. The reactive material may be solid, liquid or gaseous. Finely divided oxides, e.g. silica, alumina and magnesia may be produced or metal nitrides may be formed by reacting metal oxides in the arc with nitrogen or ammonia.
