Abstract
1395691 Inerting system for fuel tanks GARRETT CORP 5 Oct 1973 46661/73 Heading ASA A system for inerting a fuel tank, e.g. in aircraft, comprises a catalytic reactor which reacts fuel and air, a cooler for cooling the reaction gases and a conduit which passes the cooled gases to the fuel tank. Cooling may be accomplished by expansion through a turbine, and/or heat exchange with ram air, aircraft fuel, chilled air from the aircraft environmental conditioning system and/or water. Moisture will be inherently removed many of these cooling methods but a specific moisture removing stage may be incorporated into the system. Catalytic reaction of the fuel and air may be effected with a metal oxide catalyst at 500-600‹F. The catalyst may include Pt or Pd.
