Abstract
1438353 Cooling nuclear reactors NUCLEAR POWER CO (WHETSTONE) Ltd and ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 26 June 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40258/73 Addition to 1336716 Heading G6C An emergency cooling system for a gas-cooled reactor 28 includes a heat-exchanger 31 to which part of the reactor coolant can be diverted after leaving the core, a safety valve 37 for permitting expulsion of water or vapour from the system if a predetermined pressure therein is exceeded and make-up feedwater means. Valves 38, 39 are operable automatically in response to triggering of a temperature responsive unit 40 for diverting part of the reactor coolant which would otherwise pass to high and low pressure gas turbines 25, 26. The make-up feedwater means comprises water reservoir 33 and pump 34. Normally, cooling is afforded by water circulating through coolers 2, 3 and heat-exchanger 5 forming part of a heat-sink circuit 6.
