Abstract
1391798 Colour television tubes RCA CORPORATION 31 May 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 25386/72 Heading H1D A static convergence device for a shadow mask tube using three co-planar beams comprises a quadrupole magnet for producing opposite effects on the outer beams without affecting the central beam, and a sextupole magnet for producing similar effects on the outer beams. Preferably there is also a two-pole magnet for producing similar effects on all three beams to adjust colour purity. Each magnet may comprise a pair of permanent magnetic rings, relative movement of a pair adjusting the magnitude of the effect and common movement adjusting the direction of the effect. If a pair of electromagnets are used, rotation is unnecessary since adjustment of the magnitude and direction of the current in each magnet allows for all possible adjustment of the magnitude and direction of the effect on the beams. The rings should be mounted round the neck of the tube preferably with the quadrupole magnet nearest the deflection yoke, the sextupole magnet in the centre, and the bi-pole magnet on the remote end of the tube. Preferably a low permeability material such as barium ferrite is used for the magnet rings to minimize interactions with the deflection fields, but if the purity rings are remote from the deflection yoke they may be of, cheaper material such as steel.
