Abstract

1388684 Light filters AGFA-GEVAERT 28 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6726/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A light filter comprises a support of hydrophobic film coated on at least one side with a yellow pyroxolinone dye dispersed in an optionally alkylated melamine-formaldehyde resin binder. The support is a cellulose ester, polystyrol, polycarbonate or a high molecular weight homer polyester e.g. biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate. Other polyesters and copolyesters of phthalic, isophthalic, sebacic and adipic acids with ethylene and neopentyl glycol and 1, 4-di (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane are mentioned. A subbing coating to assist adhesion of the light-absorbing coating may be applied. The material may be used in sun glasses, light filters or photographic binder films. The sub-coating may comprise vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride/n-butyl acrylate/itaconic acid copolymer optionally containing dispersed silica and be applied as a dispersion. In Examples (1 & 2) polyethylene terephthalate films subcoated, and the dye binder layer applied as a solution, contains phenyl trichlorosilane, (3) one side of a polyethylene terephthalate is film coated similarly to example 1, the reverse side being coated by solution with an antistatic layer comprising styrene/maleic acid monosodium salt copolymer and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, and (4) a cellulose triacetate or polystyrene film is coated directly with a dye/binder solution.
