Abstract

1398159 Flexible opaque photographic supports EASTMAN KODAK CO 26 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49425/72 Heading G2C [Also in Division B2] A photographic element comprises a flexible support having thereon a first opaque layer having a binder comprising casein, an opaqueing pigment and a compatible film-forming organic polymer, and a second layer contiguous thereto, the second layer being non-pigmented and having a binder comprising casein and a compatible film-forming organic polymer. The support may be a polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, paper, polyethylene coated paper, polycarbonates, polyacetals, polystyrene, cellulose organic esters, polyethylene. The support may be given a subbing treatment, with a flame, oxidizing agent, corona discharge or ultraviolet radiation or by coating with a mixture containing colloidal silica. The opaque pigment is preferably carbon black. Suitable film-forming polymers are polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, copolymers of styrene, copolymers of vinyl chloride, copolymers of vinylidene chloride and copolymers of alkyl acrylates, polymers of monoethylenically unsaturated nitrogenous monomer, alkylene oxide polymers. The coating compositions may also include hardeners for casein, matting agents such as polymethylmethacrylate beads, silica, starch or glass particles. The coatings may be applied by dipping, brushing, extrusion coating. The elements may be used as image-receiving elements which comprise a support having the opaque coating on the back and being coated on the face side with an image-receiving layer for a silver image comprising a silver precipitating agent or with an image-receiving layer for a dye image comprising any suitable hydrophilic colloids containing a basic mordant for mordanting acid solubilized diffusible dyes. A hydrophobic resin layer may be provided between the support and the image-receiving layer. Suitable hydrophobic resins are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(3-methylbutene-1), poly(octene-1), poly(decene-1), polyamides, polyacetate, polycarbonates, cellulose triacetate, cellulose acetate butyrate and ethyl cellulose. Preferred silver precipitating agents are the noble metals such as silver, gold, platinum and palladium. The element may also be used as a support for a light-sensitive silver salt or colour diffusion transfer element. The second layer reduces pinholes and cracking of the opaque first layer.
