Abstract

1385894 Treating cellulosic materials BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO Ltd 16 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 4827/71 Headings DIP and D2B The wet strength and tensile strength of paper and muslin cloth is improved by saturating the materials with an aqueous solution of a zirconium salt e.g. ammonium zirconyl carbonate, zirconyl chloride or zirconyl acetate, or in the case of paper adding the solution to the pulp, and treating the materials to form a water insoluble zirconium derivative in an amount of at least 0.3% calculated at ZrO 2 based on the material e.g. by drying or treatment with an NaOH solution or NH 3 gas. The aqueous zirconyl salt solution may be stabilised with alkali metal or ammonium tartrate. The muslin also has improved water-repellency and handle.
