Abstract
1359764 Lignin derivative fibres BAYER AG 14 April 1972 [16 April 1971 21 Aug 1971] 17308/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C1] Fibres of lignin derivative are obtained by dry-spinning aqueous solutions of lignin sulphonic acid or salts thereof wherein the spinning solution has a pH of from 0 to 6 and contains from 0À1 to 2% by weight of polyethylene oxide or acrylic acidacrylamide copolymer, the degree of polymerization of the added synthetic polymer being at least 5,000. The free lignin sulphonic acid and its ammonium salt are preferred materials. Calcium and other salts may be used however, and the metal ion may be removed from the fibre by leaching with acid. The freshly obtained fibres are not only wet, but water soluble. They must be dried and made insoluble by heating at a temperature of up to 400‹ C. preferably between 80 and 400‹ C.
