Abstract
1383429 Production of sintered composite articles BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 5 July 1973 [5 July 1972] 31480/72 Heading C7D Composite sintered metal articles are produced by charging a flexible container 16 with layers of different metal powder 19, 20, the container being supported in an open mesh holder 10, compressing the assembly, sintering the powder composite and then working it e.g. by extrusion. The open mesh holder 10 is closed by upper and lower perforated discs 11 and the flexible container 16 e.g. rubber is supported on perforated support 12 and sealed by rubber seal 17 held by perforated former 15. A mandrel 14 is supported and sealed within the container. A 100 mesh ferritic steel powder 19 is charged into the container followed by austenitic stainless steel powder 20. The holder 10 may be vibrated during charging. The assembly is then isostatically compressed with liquid. The compact is then heated and hot extruded. The mandrel 14 may be perforated to give true isostatic compaction and a tubular blank may be produced by using a cylindrical polythene or paper membrane 21 to separate the powder layers.
