Abstract

1404889 Isostatic compaction and extrusion of powders FEDERAL-MOGUL CORP 5 Dec 1973 [19 Dec 19721 ]56297/73 Heading C7D Sintered powder compacts are made by packing the powder into a sealed ductile can and isostatically hot pressing to at least 90% theoretical density and then extruding the compacted assembly at an extrusion ratio of at least 2:1. The powders which are finer than 250 microns may be Al alloys, Fe alloys and Ni superalloys, B 4 C, WC, TiC, TaC, UO 2 . The two stage compaction allows the use of mild steel cans instead of stainless steel and compaction and extrusion can be effected at 1000-3000‹F. The powder is preferably prepared by gas atomization of the melt and the isostatic pressure medium is preferably argon. A large selection of alloys are disclosed which are suitable for processing.
