Abstract

1382266 Cigarette making-machines BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 4 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 57246/71 Heading A2C A continuous-rod cigarette making-machine is adapted to produce "stratified" cigarettes of the kind described in Specification 1340100 having portions 22, 23 of two differently constituted smoking mixtures which adjoin each other at a surface inclined to the cigarette axis; a conventional machine being modified by increasing the length of the tobacco stream suction band 4 and providing an additional feed system B for a smoking mixture 5, upstream of the original tobacco feed system A, which system B includes means for shaping a pneumatically conveyed stream of the mixture 5 and means 9 for removing surplus stream material. The stream of the mixture 5 is shaped by trimmer discs 6 each having blade portions 20 inclined at an angle to the disc axis. A blow off unit 9, syncronised with the trimmer discs 6, removes surplus mixture 5 to produce gaps between successive double wedge shaped portions of the stream. The feed system A then fills in the gaps in the stream with tobacco to build up a full depth stream which after trimming by discs 14 is wrapped in conventional manner.
