Abstract
1380914 Diaphragms; moving coil transducers ROLA CELESTION Ltd 30 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 331/71 Heading H4J A loud-speaker or other electro-acoustic transducer has a diaphragm comprising a resilient self-sustaining dome 26 and a separately formed surround 28. The dome is made by coating a soft woven fabric with epoxy resin, heating and pressing in a die to the required dome shape and then treating with a plastics material which is unaffected by climatic conditions, e.g. heat and dampness. The surround 28 is clamped between rubber washers 24 at its periphery and has a corrugated portion and an inclined portion (see Fig. 2A, not shown). The inclined portion is glued or cemented to the dome 26. The surround 28 is made from linen impregnated with incompletely cured phenol formaldehyde resin. The corrugated portion is formed during a heating and pressing operation which also hardens the resin. The dome 26 and surround 28 are impervious to air. The voice coil 30 is mounted on a cylindrical epoxy resin coated paper tube and is secured to the dome 26 and surround 28 by glue or cement. The loud-speaker shown is of the "mid range" type and comprises an annular front plate 10 behind which fits an annular strip 14 of synthetic material. Behind a protective grill are a pair of insulating washers 18 and between the washers 18 pass beryllium strips 20 (see also Fig. 2A, not shown) which connect the voice coil 30 to tags 33. A stainless steel diaphragm housing 22 (see also Fig. 2A) is provided. The tags 33 are at the periphery of a washer 32. A magnet assembly comprises an annular polepiece 34 having a front dome of perforated brass sheet. A foam plug 37 fills the aperture in polepiece 34. An annular foam strip 38 is compressed by an annular magnet 40, preferably of the ceramic type. The magnet assembly is held between front and rear plates 42, 44 by brass screws 46. A rear cover 48 is filled by a foam plug 50 and fits around the rear plate 44. Leads connect between external tags 52 and the tags 33.
