Abstract
1380237 Coated steel substrates NATIONAL RESEARCH CORP 19 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 13037/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] Cr steel substrates having 5-20 wt. % Cr, e.g. stainless steels, are coated with, in order, (a) a layer of Fe or Ni having a thickness of less than 1Á, (b) a layer of Ti of 0.1-Á thickness and (c) a coating of boron carbide of 10-50Á thickness. The boron carbide (B 4 C) has a C content of 15-30 wt %. The coatings are applied by vapour deposition. In an Example, coatings (b) and (c) are applied by electron beam bombardment of crucibles containing Ti and B,C respectively, and coating (a) is applied by electrically heating a Ni-plated tungsten wire. During the coating process, the substrate is heated to 250-700C. The process is used to improve the erosion-resistance of aircraft parts, e.g. turbine blades and airframe components.
