Abstract

1379798 Colouring anodized aluminium; electro-phoretic deposition HONNY CHEMICALS CO Ltd 31 July 1972 35756/72 Heading C7B An anodized surface of an Al metal or alloy article is coloured by first A.C. electrolysis in an aqueous solution of a salt or salts of one or more Group VIII metals, e.g. selected from sulphates, phosphates, nitrates and acetates of Fe, Co and Ni, formates and propionates of Co and Ni and ferrous fumarate, then D.C. electrolysis with article as anode in an aqueous solution having a conductivity of at least 10Á#<SP>-1</SP> cm<SP>-1</SP> e.g. of Na/KNO 3 or NaCO 3 or the same as that for A.C. electrolysis, or of a water-soluble resin. The article may be coated with resin after D.C. electrolysis by electrophoretic or electrostatic deposition, spraying or dip-coating. The resin may be acrylic, alkyd, acrylic-alkyd, epoxy or phenolic resin, or reaction products thereof with organic amines or NH 4 OH, or mixtures thereof with melamine resins. The counter-electrode in A.C. electrolysis may be of metal or graphite; the cathode in D.C. electrolysis may be a plate of A1 or stainless steel Anodizing may be effected using D.C. in a solution of sulphuric, oxalic or citric acid for KOH or Na 2 CO 3 after degreasing with C 2 HCl 3 .
