Abstract
1310163 Electroplating with zinc NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY TRADE AND COMMERCE 10 March 1970 [11 March 1969] 11463/70 Heading C7B Zn is electroplated from an aqueous solution which has a pH above 5, is substantially free from ammonium ions and which comprises (a) 0À05 to 0À8 gram-atom of Zn per litre, (b) a polyhydroxy acid and/or water soluble salt thereof and (c) boric acid and/or a borate. The total content of (b) is in a molar ratio to the Zn of 1À3:1 to 2À2:1 and the total content of (c) is in a molar ratio to (b) of above 1À8:1 where the quantities of (b) and (c) are calculated on the respective free acids. The solution may be made up from ZnSO 4 , ZnCl 2 or ZnO; sodium gluconate or heptonate, and H 3 BO 3 . The current density may be 0À1-10 amps/dm<SP>2</SP>. The solution may contain conductivity increasing inorganic salts such as Na 2 SO 4 or chlorides. It may also contain brighteners such as benzaldehyde. gelatine, piperonal, vanillin, veratraldehyde or protein decomposition products. A metal, prior to Zn electroplating, may be (i) degreased in an organic solvent, (ii) degreased in an alkaline medium e.g. electrolytically and (iii) pickled with HCl. After the Zn electroplating, the metal may be conventionally passivated with specified chromate containing solutions and may thereafter be lacquered. In the Examples, screw bolts are electroplated with Zn in a perforated drum.
