Abstract
1379088 Preparing water-soluble acrylic polymers RHONE-PROGIL 24 Oct 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 49020/72 Addition to 1310729 Heading C3P The preparation of water-soluble acrylic polymers or copolymers in the solid state is effected by depositing an aqueous solution of the corresponding acrylic monomer or monomers, containing a photopolymerization promoter and a heat-sensitive initiator which supplements and boosts the action of the photopolymerization promoter, in the form of a layer or as discrete droplets on a fixed or moving support, irradiating the layer or droplets with light of wavelength 1500 to 5000Š, and removing the resulting acrylic polymer from the support. The promoter is preferably a benzoin alkyl ether, e.g. benzoin n-propyl ether, and the initiator may be azobis-isobutyronitrile or a persulphate/bisulphite redox system. A chain transfer agent such as a mercaptan or methyl alcohol may be included in the photopolymerizable composition. Polymerization is preferably effected at a pH of 8 to 13. In examples acrylamide is copolymerized with acrylonitrile and/or acrylic acid.
