Abstract

1530649 Sulphonation of polymers containing epoxy groups S PAUL and B RANBY 25 Oct 1976 [27 Oct 1975] 44291/76 Heading C3P A polymer which contains units of the formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are H or inert organic groups, R is H or alkyl, M is H or a monovalent cation derived from an inorganic sulphite and P is a unit derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, is prepared by copolymerizing one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers with a glycidyl ester of an acid of the formula R 1 R 2 C = CR 3 COOH and sulphonating the product in aqueous medium using a water-soluble inorganic sulphite salt. In the examples a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacyrlate and a copolymer of styrene and glycidyl acrylate are sulphonated using sodium sulphite in the presence of tetrabutyl ammonium bromide or bisulphate.
