Abstract

1376218 m-phenylene isophthalamide polymer solutions TEIJIN Ltd 17 May 1972 23288/72 Heading C3R A method of preparing a homogeneous solution of a polymer containing predominantly mphenylene isophthalamide units comprises:- (A) mixing at - 20 to T 1 ‹ C. (i) a preformed fibre-forming polymer in which at least 90 mol. per cent of the recurring units are m-phenylene isophthalamide and (ii) a solvent comprising at least 80 wt. per cent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone in the substantial absence of inorganic salts and at a polymer concentration of 15 to 30 wt. per cent to form a uniform slurry, and (B) heating the slurry to between T 1 and T 2 ‹ C., but not above 150‹ C. to form the solution. The temperatures T 1 and T 2 are defined by T 1 = - 18 + 3C-1À5X and T 2 = 330-10C + 7X wherein C is the wt. per cent polymer in the slurry and X is the mol. per cent units other than m-phenylene isophthalamide. Various possible copolymer units are mentioned which may be linked by amide, ester, imide, benzimidazole, benzoxazole or oxdiazole units. In examples monomers providing the other units are terephthalic acid, trimellitic anhydride monochloride, 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid, and 2,4-di-aminotoluene.
