Abstract
1367183 Wax emulsions FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 4 Aug 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 36563/72 Heading B1V [Also in Division C3] Aqueous bright drying emulsions comprise (1) a wax emulsion, optionally together with a polymer dispersion, to which has been added (2) an aqueous non-ionic emulsifier-containing dispersion of a salt of a complex-forming bivalent or trivalent metal with an alkane monocarboxylic acid having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, the metal salt dispersion having a solids content of 10 to 60 weight per cent and a weight proportion of metal salt to non-ionic emulsifier of from 2:1 to 1:2. The wax may be carnauba, ouricury, candelilla, oxidised montan, ozocerite, oxidised or unoxidised paraffin or polyethylene wax. The salt may be a zinc, calcium, magnesium, cadmium or aluminium salt of heptanoic, octanoic, 2-ethylhexanoic, isononanoic or lauric acid. The non-ionic emulsifier may be a condensate of ethylene oxide with an alkylphenol, C 12-18 fatty alcohol or C 12-18 fatty acid. The compositions may also contain colophonymaleate, styrene-maleic anhydride and polyester resins solubilised with ammonia or amines; plasticisers, e.g. glycol ethers and phosphate esters; wetting and levelling agents e.g. fluorinated carboxylic acids; solvents; surfactants; dyes and preservatives. Examples describe the preparation of bright drying emulsions by mixing zinc octoate dispersed in water with the aid of ethoxylated tributyl phenol with (1) polyethylene wax emulsified with ethoxylated nonylphenol and 2-amino-2-methylpropanol-1, ammoniacal colophony-maleate or styrene-maleic resin, and a fluorinated wetting agent; (2) styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion, methyl diglycol, dibutoxyethyl phosphate, fluorinated wetting agent and ammoniacal colophony-maleate resin; (3) montan, polyethylene and microcrystalline wax emulsions, ethoxylated nonylphenol, potassium hydroxide, ammoniacal colophony-maleate resin, styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion, methyl diglycol, dibutoxyethyl phosphate, ethylene glycol and fluorinated wetting agent; and (4) polyethylene dispersion, ammoniacal colophony-maleate, styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion, methyl diglycol, dibutoxyethyl phosphate, ethylene glycol and a fluorinated wetting agent.
