Abstract
A coating or impregnating composition, having a total solids content of at least 8% by weight, comprises an aqueous medium having dispersed therein a water-insoluble addition polymer and a wax, the proportions of polymer and wax being 10 to 95 parts by weight of polymer to 90 to 5 parts by weight of wax; said aqueous dispersion also containing a dispersing agent; 0 to 50% by weight (based on the weight of polymer) of an alkali soluble resin; and, dissolved in said aqueous medium, a polyvalent metal compound dissociable to form polyvalent metal ions other than, or in addition to, ions of calcium or magnesium. Long lists of suitable monomers are given. Copolymers exemplified are: ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate / methacrylic acid; ethyl acrylate / styrene / methacrylic acid; and ethyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The above copolymers, in the form of emulsions produced by conventional emulsion polymerization, are blended with a wax emulsion comprising polyethylene wax, oleic acid and morpholine, together with an ammonia-soluble alkyd resin, plasticizers and surface-active agents to form floor polishes, and to each is added one of the following compounds: cadmium sulphate, aluminium diacetate, zinc acetate, barium acetate, nickel chloride, manganese sulphate, and zinc tetra-ammine benzoate. The polishes are applied to vinyl and rubber floor tiles. Many other surfaces, to which the compositions may be applied are specified. Specified waxes are carnauba, candelilla, montan, lanolin, cocoa butter, cottonseed, stearin, Japan wax, bayberry, myrtle, mace, palm kernel, beeswax, spermaceti, Chinese insect, mutton tallow, hydrogenated coconut and soybean oils, paraffin, ceresin and ozokerite. Specified alkali-soluble resins include shellac, Manila gum, Loba gum, and resin acids. Dispersing agents specified are sodium, potassium and ammonium soaps and morpholine oleate and ricinoleate. Specified polyvalent metals are Be, Cd, Zn, Ba, Sr, Al, Bi, Sb, Pb, Co, Fe and Ni. Pigments such as TiO2, carbon black, iron blues, phthalocyanines and metal oxides, hydroxides, sulphides, sulphates, silicates and chromates may be present, and also aluminium flake, bronze powder, pearl essence, talc, barytes, China clay and diatomaceous earth, terpene-phenolic resins, heat process Congo, wood resin and oxidised petroleum wax.
