Abstract
1362865 Gravity controlled stabilizer CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 19 Aug 1971 [21 Aug 1970] 38981/71 Headings B7M and B7V A gravity controlled stabilizer for a moving underwater body 1 comprises a rudder 6 attached to the body for pivotal movement about an axis 7 in the longitudinal vertical centre plane of the body, the pivoting axis being disposed ahead of the hydrodynamic centre of the rudder. The centre of gravity of the rudder is displaced longitudinally from the pivoting axis so that when the axis deviates from the vertical plane the force of gravity on the rudder will alter the angle of incidence of the rudder and hydrodynamic force on the rudder will tend to return the pivoting axis to the vertical plane. In Fig. 1 the centre of gravity is behind the pivoting axis; in the example of Fig. 7 (not shown) the rudder 76 is to control roll only and its centre of gravity is ahead of its pivoting axis.
