Abstract
1,170,359. Steering and stabilizing ships; hydrofoils; controlling propulsive jets. BOWLES ENG. CORP. 28 April, 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 19589/67. Headings B7A, B7G, B7M and B7V. [Also in Division F2] A fluid-operated fluid-flow control device comprises a structure consisting of a foil or having at least one longitudinal section of foil configuration, the structure 1 having at least one surface with a depression 5 having a leading edge 8 and a surface extending rearwardly from the leading edge, control means 7 for selectively applying a force to the structure at the depression, the control means including manifolds 2 and outlets 4 for admitting control fluid at a selectively adjustable flow rate along the rearwardly extending surface of the depression 5 from its leading edge or wall 51. The device can produce forward motion of a watercraft or an aircraft and by varying the rate of fluid flow on the two sides of the foil the device serves as a steering control for water craft including hydrofoil craft. The device can also provide roll stabilization for large watercraft.
