Abstract

1352505 Moulding fibre reinforced polyimide articles BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 9 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 33661/70 Heading B5A In a method of making a carbon fibre reinforced polyimide tray, layers 10A, 10B, 10C, (Fig. 1) of carbon fibre fabric, sprinkled with polyimide resin powder 13, are placed in the female half 11 of a compression mould 12, heated to 230-250‹ C. for 2-35 minutes to melt the resin powder, and thereafter compressed, whilst being heated to 300‹ C., to harden the resin. After removal from the mould, the tray is heated to 400‹ C. to complete hardening. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a trough having reinforcements 20 is injection moulded, the polyimide resin being melted and placed in a container 26 from which it is drawn by vacuum into the mould to impregnate glass fibre reinforcements 20. The mould is heated, as above, to 300‹ C. to harden the resin, and the moulding further heated to 400‹ C. after removal from the mould.
