Abstract
1350052 Automatic speed control MOTOREN-UND TURBINEN-UNION FRIEDRICHSHAFEN GmbH 29 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 9373/72 Heading G3R The speed of an I.C. engine is retroactively controlled by a system including a PID governor, a fuel injection limiting arrangement, and two speed measuring devices each capable of stopping the engine if excessive speed occurs. In the system shown in Fig.1, the speed of a diesel engine 11 is measured by a tachogenerator 12 producing a voltage proportional to speed and a digital device 13 forming a signal with a frequency related to the speed. Corresponding DC signals are fed to a selection switch 16 enabling either signal to be compared with a set speed signal from a potentiometer 17 at a junction 18. The resultant error signal passes to a PID governor 19 and then to a selection switch 22 which also receives a signal from a fuel injection governor 20. The selected output from switch 22 is compared in a gate circuit 23 with a fuel injection limit signal produced by a device 24 and dependent on engine speed, oil temperature, air temperature or air pressure. The smaller of the two signals is fed from circuit 23 through an amplifier 26 to a servo valve 27 which produces an hydraulic signal controlling a cylinder 30 associated with a fuel injection pump 31. A feedback signal from the pump is passed to a point 25 for addition to the output signal from circuit 23 and also to a proportionality adjusting circuit 35 connected to the junction 18. A stop valve 29 is actuated through an OR gate 34 to stop the engine if either of the actual speed signals exceeds a given level. An arrangement using four diesel engines to drive generators supplying a common main is described, Figs.6-7 (not shown).
