Abstract

585,032. Fluid-pressure servomotors. ELDRED, R. J.; WALKER, G. W. HIGGS-, and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1943, No. 20740. [Class 135] A speed governor for an internal combustion turbine comprises a pump driven by the turbine and supplying fuel through main control valve openings 2 to the atomisers and pressures on each side of the openings 2 are applied to each side of a spring-loaded piston 10 that controls the by-pass openings 3 to allow excess fuel to return to the suction of the fuel pump. When the speed of the turbine falls, the pressure difference across the openings 2 is reduced and the piston 10 moves to close the by-pass openings 3 and opens a port 14 whereby fuel passing through the throttle 14a builds up pressure in the space 15 and causes the cylinder 12 to follow the movement of the piston so that a constant pressure difference is maintained across the openings 2 and the speed is maintained constant for varying load condi-. tions on the turbine. The speed at which the cylinder 12 follows the piston 10 is determined by the adjustment of the throttle .19. The speed at which the turbine is to be controlled is adjusted by varying the openings 2 by a lever 1 connected to a control valve 4. To raise the speed, the control valve is moved to the right and pressure difference across the piston 7 causes it to move to enlarge the openings 2. The rate of movement is controlled by the throttle 9 and the fuel displaced by the piston passes to the atomisers and assists the acceleration required. The governor may be used with.the starting valve described in Specification 585,029, [Group XXVI], controlling acceleration up to idling speed.
