Abstract

1349591 Continuous casting USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 12 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 1518/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] A tundish or degassing vessel 10 comprises a nozzle 14 and a plurality of sliding gates which control outflow of molten metal through the nozzle 14, at least one gate 15 having a vertical passage 17 for introducing inert gas through the nozzle 14 in the nozzle-closing position of the gate to prevent solidification of the metal. The passage 17 is screw-threaded and receives a gas inlet pipe 19. The gate 15 is covered on its sides and bottom by a steel jacket 18. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 2, 3), the gas passage tapers upwardly, includes at its outlet a gas permeable refractory block (25) and has a vertical or horizontal gas inlet pipe.
